This 3-hour session is designed to take a look into three 21st century classrooms and compare what we see in the Teaching Channel videos to what we currently see in your own schools. Then, discuss how you, as instructional leaders, can support teachers as they make shifts that align with our new North Carolina Standard Course of Study and the needs of our 21st century learners.

Understanding the 21st Century Learner

Our new North Carolina Standard Course of Study is built upon the new standards that demand a new approach to teaching and learning. This summer, educators across North Carolina attended Summer Institutes where they built upon last year's topic of the "what" of the new standards. The focus this year was the "how" of implementation.


Think about the P21 framework at your right. As administrators observe classrooms and provide feedback, it is important to ensure that the lesson aligns with grade- and content-specific standards.


However, it is just as imperative that administrators ensure that high-quality instruction is taking place that supports the development of critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity; the development of life and career skills; and the students' opportunity to increase literacy by manipulating multiple sources of information through media and technology.

Activity #4: Roles in the ELA Classroom (5 minutes)

As in math, there are three major shifts in English Language Arts. After you review the roles of the student, the teacher, and the principal in terms of the three shifts, visit our lino below and answer these questions:

The 2012 Summer Institutes focused on practical classroom implementation and pedagogy. Last year, teachers engaged in activities to help them learn the standards.
